    On the occasion of the 31st CILSS Day, the Malian President and current CILSS chairman, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK), raised awareness about the importance of water for the Sahel and West Africa’s social and economic development. In his video message, he called for national and regional policies to support sustainable management of agricultural water resources. Water resource management will also help address the many challenges that the region faces such as food security, resilience and climate change. Read on

    CILSS organised a workshop in Niamey from 23-25 August that brought together some 30 resilience experts from five Sahelian countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Senegal), as well as development partners. Within the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA) and the Global Alliance for Resilience (AGIR), the region is working to develop a consensual resilience measurement tool.     As the main component of the ECOWAS Food Storage Strategy, the Regional Food Security Reserve constitutes a third line of response to crises, after local/community-level and national food reserves. Adopted in February 2013 at the ECOWAS Heads of State Conference in Yamoussoukro, the reserve is an important instrument of regional solidarity. Read on

    Nigerian Minister of Health Isaac Adewole declared on 27 June a "nutrition emergency" in Borno State, where a large portion of the population is facing problems with access to food, water and health services due to the conflict in the north-east of the country. Information from recent rapid assessments raises the possibility that a famine could be occurring in the worst affected and less accessible pockets of the state. Read on

    Experts of the regional system for the prevention and management of food crises (PREGEC) met from 9 to 10 June in Abidjan to take stock of the food and nutrition situation in the region at the beginning of the lean season. They also discussed the prospects for the 2016-17 agro-pastoral campaign. The prognosis made at their last meeting in April was confirmed: the food and nutrition situation is satisfactory except in the Lake Chad Basin, which hosts a large number of displaced persons and refugees.     From 17 to 19 May, UEMOA organised the 4th meeting of the Regional Consultative Committee for Agricultural Sectors (CCRFA) in Ouagadougou. Under the theme of "Strengthening the involvement of agricultural professional actors in the implementation of the UEMOA Agricultural Policy (PAU)," the meeting brought together members of the Network of Farmers' and Agricultural Producers' Organisations of West Africa (ROPPA), several sub-regional and national professional organisations, government representatives and technical and financial partners.     West African decision makers will have a powerful new tool in devising new policies and evaluate existing initiatives for resilience building. CILSS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a technical Platform for the analysis and measurement of resilience of populations in the Sahel and West Africa (PTMR-SAO). The aim of the platform is to produce harmonised and consensual information and analysis of resilience at the national and regional levels. Read on

    West African ministers came together to outline a course of action to accelerate progress on the Great Green Wall. The First Conference of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative was held from 2-7 May in Dakar, bringing together ministers from countries north and south of the Sahara as well as their development partners. Organised by the African Union, the high-level conference follows on the COP21 climate change conference, during which the international community pledged an additional USD 4 billion in support for the Great Green Wall over the next 5 years.     On the sidelines of the Restricted Meeting of the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA), OECD Deputy Secretary-General Mr Douglas Frantz invited on 14 April 2016 a high-level delegation of West African leaders for a brief exchange on co-operation between Africa and the OECD. The delegation was composed of six West African ministers as well as regional leaders from ECOWAS, UEMOA and CILSS and representatives of West African agricultural producers’ organisations. Read on
