    Chad: USD 10 million for humanitarian assistance

    The security situation remains extremely fragile in the Lake Chad Basin and there have been several security incidents on Chad’s borders. According to the most recent UNOCHA update on the humanitarian situation in Chad: some 3.8 million people faced food insecurity at the end of August; and the country hosts some 388 000 refugees, 106 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 89 000 returnees.     As part of the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA), the regional technical meeting of the for the crisis prevention and management mechanism (PREGEC) was held from 19-21 September 2016, in Lome, Togo. Participants presented the agricultural forecasts and food prospects for the Sahel and West Africa. The agricultural forecast is good; cereal production could be as high as 64-75 million tonnes, an increase of up to 28% compared to the five-year average. Read on

    On the occasion of the 31st CILSS Day, the Malian President and current CILSS chairman, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK), raised awareness about the importance of water for the Sahel and West Africa’s social and economic development. In his video message, he called for national and regional policies to support sustainable management of agricultural water resources. Water resource management will also help address the many challenges that the region faces such as food security, resilience and climate change. Read on

    Developing a resilience measurement tool

    CILSS organised a workshop in Niamey from 23-25 August that brought together some 30 resilience experts from five Sahelian countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Senegal), as well as development partners. Within the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA) and the Global Alliance for Resilience (AGIR), the region is working to develop a consensual resilience measurement tool.     The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) Project works to support the sharing of data to make information about agriculture and nutrition available, accessible and usable. The Land Portal and partners launched a survey of people working with open data in the agriculture and nutrition space. The data from this survey will provide inputs for a training needs assessment report that will inform the development of new training materials and courses.     France promotes “4/1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate”

    Officially launched during the COP21 Climate Change Conference in December 2015, the “4/1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate” aims to ensure that agriculture contributes to combating climate change. French Agriculture Minister Stéphane Le Foll went on mission to Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, to inform the West African partner countries about the initiative and encourage the establishment and diffusion of climate-smart agricultural practices to increase the carbon stock of soils and regenerate degraded soils.     Nigerian Minister of Health Isaac Adewole declared on 27 June a "nutrition emergency" in Borno State, where a large portion of the population is facing problems with access to food, water and health services due to the conflict in the north-east of the country.     Experts of the regional system for the prevention and management of food crises (PREGEC) met from 9 to 10 June in Abidjan to take stock of the food and nutrition situation in the region at the beginning of the lean season. They also discussed the prospects for the 2016-17 agro-pastoral campaign. The prognosis made at their last meeting in April was confirmed: the food and nutrition situation is satisfactory except in the Lake Chad Basin, which hosts a large number of displaced persons and refugees.     From 17 to 19 May, UEMOA organised the 4th meeting of the Regional Consultative Committee for Agricultural Sectors (CCRFA) in Ouagadougou. Under the theme of "Strengthening the involvement of agricultural professional actors in the implementation of the UEMOA Agricultural Policy (PAU)," the meeting brought together members of the Network of Farmers' and Agricultural Producers' Organisations of West Africa (ROPPA), several sub-regional and national professional organisations, government representatives and technical and financial partners.
