On the occasion of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Institute for Security Studies in Dakar published a study on the motivations of young people in Mali to join jihadist groups. The study was based on interviews with more than 60 young people who were engaged in extremism. The analysis shows that as countries are faced with this phenomenon, part of the solution could be to focus more on development and on building resilient societies.
