Some 2.7 million Sierra Leoneans cast their ballots in the 2018 general elections on 7 March to choose a new president, a new parliament and new local council representatives. Sixteen candidates competed for the presidency, including Foreign Minister Samura Kamara who was the candidate of the ruling All People’s Congress (42% of votes) and the main opposition candidate Julius Maada Bio (43% of votes). UNICEF has published a statistical report on child marriage in West and Central Africa. As a previous Maps & Facts issue has shown, the region remains one of the most impacted by early marriage, which is one of the practices that the sustainable development goals seek to eradicate. Morocco, Nigeria plan for a trans-African gas pipeline

An ambitious flagship project, the long-awaited construction of a trans-African gas pipeline connecting Nigeria via Morocco to Europe, might finally advance. The project was officially announced in December 2016 during a visit of King Mohammed VI to Nigeria. The 4 000 km pipeline will run along the Gulf of Guinea countries and will help create industrial hubs, and thereby will also boost regional economic integration beyond the energy sector. Read on

New Ebola vaccine offers 100% protection

The 2014 Ebola epidemic cost the lives of more than 11 000 West Africans. Researchers now have developed a vaccine that they consider to offer 100% protection against the disease. A trial involving nearly 12 000 people was conducted by the WHO and partners in Guinea. No Ebola cases were recorded 10 days or more after vaccination of nearly 6 000 people who received the new vaccine, called rVSV-ZEBOV. Read on

On 16 September, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is also the current ECOWAS Chairwoman, met in Monrovia with Xavier Crespin, the Director General of the West African Health Organization (WAHO). Sierra Leone: Agribusiness project to benefit 50 000 farmers

The Government of Sierra Leone, the World Bank and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) intend to better link farmers to agribusinesses. They signed a USD 55 million project to support smallholder commercialisation and agribusiness development. Under the five-year credit agreement and in line with the government’s Agenda for Prosperity, the project aims to benefit some 50 000 smallholder farmers, including 40% women and young farmers.
