    African leaders gathered from 10-15 October at the Summit on Maritime Security and safety, held in Lomé within the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Twenty-two African delegations adopted the African Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development. The Charter aims to put into place an African strategy for the protection of its seas and oceans, to ensure peace, security and stability, and to make the African maritime space the key driver for sustainable economic development.     As part of the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA), the regional technical meeting of the for the crisis prevention and management mechanism (PREGEC) was held from 19-21 September 2016, in Lome, Togo. Participants presented the agricultural forecasts and food prospects for the Sahel and West Africa. The agricultural forecast is good; cereal production could be as high as 64-75 million tonnes, an increase of up to 28% compared to the five-year average. Read on

    The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) Project works to support the sharing of data to make information about agriculture and nutrition available, accessible and usable. The Land Portal and partners launched a survey of people working with open data in the agriculture and nutrition space. The data from this survey will provide inputs for a training needs assessment report that will inform the development of new training materials and courses.     Officially launched during the COP21 Climate Change Conference in December 2015, the “4/1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate” aims to ensure that agriculture contributes to combating climate change. French Agriculture Minister Stéphane Le Foll went on mission to Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, to inform the West African partner countries about the initiative and encourage the establishment and diffusion of climate-smart agricultural practices to increase the carbon stock of soils and regenerate degraded soils.
